Colorado “Bottle Bill” Recycling Ideas

Colorado State officials are seeking innovative recycling ideas to reduce the amount of litter around the state, and new legislation has the potential to benefit both schools and the environment. They are considering adding a 5 cent surcharge to the price of every bottle of water or beer that is consumed in the state. That could raise as much as $125 million that would go to improving Colorado's K-12 schools. Additionally, consumers who returned their used bottles to their grocer or a recycling center would get their 5 cents per bottle returned.

Research shows that states with no recycling deposit on bottles, like Colorado, only recycle about a quarter of the total bottles used. The eleven states that do have "bottle bills" where deposits are offered have seen much less litter and an average 83% participation rate.
